You can feel it before you see it. The mornings in Wikieup are starting off cool, the light comes in a little lower across the desert, and in our kitchen that means one thing: pie season is coming back around.

We bake our pies here, by hand, the same way we have for decades. All year long the case holds the regulars, and the regulars have their favorites. But once the heat finally breaks over the Arizona high desert, the seasonal pies come back, and the whole counter smells like fall.

What comes back when the weather turns

Two pies only show up when the season is right, and people ask about them long before they arrive:

  • Pumpkin, smooth, spiced, and the reason a lot of families plan their drive around us in November.
  • Dutch apple, apple pie under a crumb topping that goes buttery and crisp in the oven. If you only try one this fall, make it this one.

They join the pies we bake all year, and there is no wrong choice on that list:

  • Black Walnut Cream, our house specialty
  • Chocolate Cream
  • Coconut Cream
  • Banana Cream
  • Lemon Cream
  • Apple
  • Cherry
  • Blueberry
  • Pecan

A slice for the road, or a whole pie for the table

Most travelers on US-93 stop in for a slice and a cup of coffee before the long stretch toward Las Vegas or back down to Phoenix. That is exactly what a pie stop should be: fifteen quiet minutes, something warm, and then back out into the desert.

But this is also the time of year the whole pies start leaving the building. Thanksgiving tables, potlucks, a birthday out at the ranch, or a family driving through who decide the pie is worth carrying the rest of the way. We sell them by the slice and whole, and if you want a specific one waiting for you, the safest thing is to call ahead.

Why we still do it the slow way

Making pies from scratch every day is not the efficient way to run a kitchen. It is just the way Luchia's has always done it, going back to when the restaurant was added on in 1986. There is no shortcut that tastes the same, and after all these years we are not about to go looking for one.

That is also why the seasonal pies stay seasonal. Pumpkin and Dutch apple mean something because they are not sitting in the case in June.

Come see us

We are right on US-93 in Wikieup, halfway between Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Ordering a whole pie

Whole pies are baked to order, so we need a day's notice: place your order by 2:00 PM the day before you want to pick it up. Hoping for a pie today? Call us at +1 928-765-2229 and we will tell you what is still in the case.

We do not deliver. Twice a year we do bring pies to Kingman, though: the day before Thanksgiving and the day before Christmas Eve, with drop-off at the Starbucks on Stockton Hill.

Pull off the highway, stretch your legs, and have a slice with us. Season is nearly on.
